Adjusting Wing Mirrors

I know this tecnically isn't interior, but I didn't think it would go in the bodywork section.

Another one of my many problems I have come across with my MG, are the wing mirrors. I am going to replace them soon, but wanted to know why they were so poorly adjusted and cannot be re-adjusted.

You cannot see a thing out of either of them, is this just due to wear and movement over time?

I was looking into getting the adjustable ones, but the mount looks different to the static ones, are they as easy to fit?

and are they worth the extra money, or should I stick to getting some new static ones and fitting them if they can be adjusted in the fitting process.

Silly question but are these mirrors actually on the front wings or on the doors. If the latter they are adjustable but become stuck over time. You need to hold in both hands and gently work them loose as there is a tendancy for the fixings to snap off and you're left with the remains of the mirror in your hand. Also if you are replacing door mirrors and want originality make sure you get black ones and not chrome.

If it ain't broken don't try to fix it as if you do it will definitely break

They are on the doors.

I did have a wiggle at them, but I didn't want to pull them off the doors.
I will have another crack at them with some WD40 then and see if I can get them to budge.

To be honest with you, I was going to put Chrome ones on, but If I can get these moving I don't see much need to change them just yet.

Brand new set of black ones will cost your around £40 delivered to your door if you need new ones. Bit of the old WD40 may help, never heard them get stuck before though!

Wonderful, with a bit of WD40 and wiggling I managed to get them both free and now they move.

I can see out the drivers side one now, ish but still can't position the near side one properly as they move left and right but not up and down.

They also seem very far back, is this a common problem with their wing mirrors, or are they not supposed to be as useless as mine.

dont know if you know guys but the black mirrors are quite hard to get hold of but the old mini ones are the same

They sren't brilliant but once set up you should be able to see quite well with them. If buying new it is possible to buy both flat glass (standard) and convex-which helps the depth of view.

Also don't forget that the dreaded MOT dictates that you must have atleast ond mirror on the drivers side

I will look into the convex glass, thanks.

I managed to get them adjusted a lot better now, I can use them properly now, mostly.

took mine off as they were stuck and dismantled them. There is a sort of ball joint which has a screw that you can tighten to make them less mobile. If this is too tight they sieze up, if too loose they are pushed back by air pressure as you speed up.

I am probably going to invest in a new pair now I know they are only £40
