Electric Aerial

Hi guys,

My MGB originally had a telescopic aerial that even when all the way down sticks out of the wing by about a foot. So naturally that has been taken off so that I can keep the car under a cover.

Can anybody recommend to me an electrical one to fit? I bought an aerial for my last car, in the ad it stated it would fit - but it didn't. Don't want the same palaver with the MG!

Cheers 🙂

The simple answer is yes provided that the radio has a feed for it.

However to fit it you will have to remove the splash panel in the inner wing, which dependant on corrosion etc could be fun. Then having removed it you will usually have to fit an anti torque/twist bracket between the base of the aerial motor and the drivers footwell panel (which will involve removing the trim and a drill) in what is a quite tight space...

As I said its do-able but fiddly

If it ain't broken don't try to fix it as if you do it will definitely break

Yeah, I had to do all of that to get the other aerial off! Someone at MG must of been having a laugh when they designed it!

Can you recommend one that will fit the hole? I want to order a few bits and pieces before I move home so that I can fit them as soon as I get back. Don't want to drive around with a hole in the wing lol. Don't really want to put the old one back in either.

Why do you think so many are fitted in the rear wing 😉

Not fitted one myself as my radio is still the original sharp one which TBH I only use as an I tunes reciever as the radio isn't that great.

Should be fairly standard thing but will have a look and let you know 🙂

There's quite a few on FleaBay if you look under classic electric aerial but make sure that the motor body isn't so bulky that it won't foul the inner wing and end up not being straight when it goes up 🙁

Thanks! 🙂

I don't ever listen to the radio - nothing beats my own music taste! 🙂 Just need an aerial that will go right down into the wing so that I can get my cover on. It was my Dad who suggested getting an electric one. I had a look on Moss and I would need to take out a loan to buy one from there...I don't really trust eBay, plus they seem to be about £60 from there. I don't want to spend that much on something I am not going to use very often.

Hi Mike,
I noticed you remark that you don't ever listen to the radio, so just cd or ipod or m3/4. Keep in mind that when you fit the car with an electric aerial most of them will come up at the moment when you turn on the ICE unit while you don't need the radio part of the ICE.
When done at speed (you're at the Isle of Man afterall B) ) friction in the mechanic of the aerial mast can occur and if you don't listen to the radio wgy do you need the aerial afterall ?
I would suggest just get a new correct hand operated standard aerial and fix that in the original place, they should go in all the way just a button remains.
The hole in the bonnet is rather big, most standard aerials mounting posts hardly cover the hole, no need for another hole in the car and the original position is used.

Thanks Rob. I was thinking of wiring in a switch. So if ever I actually wanted to listen to the radio I could flick it and the aerial would come up.

To be honest, as long as I can get one that goes all the way down, I will be happy. Just want to make sure I get one that will fit the existing hole properly. There was a surround at the base of my original aerial to cover the hole.
