MGB GT LE Wheels
Quote from Nellie on 1st July 2010, 6:15 pmHi All,
Does anyone have any piccys or info regarding the GT LE wheels?
I'm a tad confused, are they supposed to be painted or just polished alloy?
I thought they were polished alloy but Nells' wheels seem to be painted to match the pewter body paint
Any advice?
Cheers

Quote from Colin on 1st July 2010, 6:31 pmThe originals were just laquered, not polished and the spokes should be dark grey/not black like they are on the stag etc.

Understood, Nell has dark grey spokes but also dark grey "rims", i.e. the upper area (spokes) and rims are dark grey and the lower or inset area of the spokes are black. I thought the outer rims were just polished or laquered alloy, that's to say - no paint? 😉
Cheers

Hi Colin,
Just to confirm, cause I'm a bit slow here - the dark grey finish is NOT paint, correct?. Nell definately has dark grey paint in those areas...:(
Having said that, she looks OK with the paint effect
Cheers

Quote from Colin on 3rd July 2010, 4:18 pmApologies Col..Doesn't take much to confuse me these days:(..yes they are painted grey (as Ken said) but the rest is laquered..I have seen quite a few that have been painted black on the spokes like the Stag's wheels.

Quote from Colin on 15th August 2010, 2:47 pmJust got hold of a copy of Clausager's book (for those who know of it will know it as the bible regards the MGB over the years od its production.
Anyway on page 96 it states the following-
"The design of the wheel was based on that of the Triumph Stag. The rim was 5Jx14 and had the normal mgb four-stud fixing. These wheels were given an epoxy finish to overcome corrosion. The inset areas of the spokes and recessed wheel centre were painted dark metallic grey, with rims, raised spoke edges and the raised circle around the centre in a lighter alloy colour. The small centre hubcaps carried the MG logo, which was silver and black on the north American and non-LE home market models, but silver and red on the home market L.E. cars.
There is a photo of an L.E. wheel and I guess that as the metallic grey was so dark it could easily be confused as being black-especially as the stag's were black.
Your comments please?

Quote from Dickster on 15th August 2010, 5:36 pmJubilee-Man's photo near the top is spot on colour-wise to mine which is original. To be honest, I have seen a few restored wheels that have been painted black and they just look wrong.
Each wheel is dated as can be seen in the photo - a letter which is the month (A = Jan) plus the year and mine have also been punched on the back (XX September 80) and there is an x-ray stamp too. Just for the trivia minded!!
