O Series MGB LE

Page 1 of 3Next

Well after all the talk I'm finally going to get started with getting one of the 'O' series' into my LE.

As I have managed to collect three in total and as 1 has done very little mileage since being rebuilt that will be the one I intend to aim in initially in bog standard tune with the intention of rebuilding one of the others to a fast road spec in a year or so.

Although it is an odd question at this stage but one that needs opinion I would appreciate your thoughts regards the badging.

Way back in the late 70'swhen the project was signed off the intital plan was that the standard car would continue in the guise of the 1980 year model for a further year or two before a full facelift model could be introduced.

Don Hayter was heavily involved in this and even has sets of side decals which would have been destined for these cars. The stripe is quite bold (as per a lot which were fitted to for the American market) and really not suitable for the L.E as it would lose its identitiy.

My plan is as follows-

have an original set of side stripes adapted to have the words 'O series' written in a soft italic font along the door sections.

I have also been looking for some period badging for the rear of the car and the front wings and have found these -see below

The next question is that as the L.E's had the red/silver badges (I intend to have my boot badge changed from the black to match as I've never uderstood why they didn't do this when the GT's are all red) should these be red aswell or left black?

I look forward to your thoughts 😀

If it ain't broken don't try to fix it as if you do it will definitely break

I would say that the badges chould be red .:D

Thanks John...I have to be honest so do I and the wife;) but really interested as to what a others think...

I would say look at the side badges on the TR 7. They are from the correct period and may have been used.

I did think about them but thought it would 'muddy the water' too much... Plus I think that these are far more in keeping with the style of the BL wing badges...

The prototype TR7 was badged as a MG or what about the badging on the MG Metro Turbo?

Ermm...can't think what that looked like but was really looking for a 2 Litre badge

Have you tried contacting Don Hayter for guidance as to BLs then plans for the o series badging??;)
Chris

I spent many enjoyable meetings chatting with him and even got a lift to the pub one Christmas in his o series development car which he sadly announced he's selling today 🙁

All they had lined up for it was a set of side decals, much like the LE and of which he still has a set somewhere

When are you buying it off him Colin?:D:D:D
