Rear tailgate catch sticking-Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!

My turn to ask a question-I'm rubbish with anything to do with bodywork

My tailgate lock periodically decided to play up and not open. If I press the button in it clicks,as if released, but it doesn't open. If I open it manually from inside it will shut fine but still won't open:@. I know that it is obviously to do with adjustment on the catch but when I adjust it in order that the tailgate opens and shuts okay the tailgate is not pulled fully home on the seals as a result rattles-which will no doubt drive me mad when I get it back on the road again next week.

Any ideas/pearls of wisdom greatly recieved:D

If it ain't broken don't try to fix it as if you do it will definitely break

Yep - I had the same problem with the C. Ended up with a combination of grease, WD40 and very fine adjustment. If I remember rightly I loosened the clamps just enough so that I had to tap the U shaped catch on the body with a small hammer to adjust it downwards - this allowed very small changes to be made as the tailgate could be opened and shut gently without the bar moving. The grease stopped the catch squeaking on the bar. I eventually got it just tight enough to seal without the difficulties opening it.
If that doesnt work perhaps a bigger hammer.......:D

Thanks Ken

I haven't resorted to the hammer yet. I was wondering if the hinge plate may be bent will have to check against Charklotte's GT.

Almost back together again now (just the propshaft seal, propshaft & then the exhaust)- hopefully she'll be purring again by this time tomorrow;)
